Lead times on Stage V/5 Engines – Why the Wait?

If you’ve been trying to source a Stage V/5 diesel engine for non-road mobile machinery, then you’ll no doubt be aware of the increased lead times and supply issues currently facing manufacturers.

You may be wondering if Covid-19 is to blame and you’d be correct, in part, but it’s not quite as straightforward as you may think.

At present, any electronic engine with an ECU (engine control unit), including Stage V/5 and Tier 4 Final, will be subject to supply shortages and longer than normal lead times.

Semiconductor supply

Longer lead times are the result of a complex range of factors, most notably, the current global shortage of semiconductors. This is primarily as a result of stockpiling by the computer and mobile industries, as well as geopolitical rivalry between the US and China. The increased demand for consumer electronics during lockdown far outweighed the demand for new cars, resulting in electronic componentry supply shifting towards this industry and leaving the automotive industry at the back of the queue.

Global steel shortages

Another contributing factor towards Stage V engine delays is the current global steel shortages, as a result of many foundries closing during lockdown. Demand now far outweighs supply and massive backlogs now exist within the industry, which will continue to impact lead times for the remainder of 2021. In addition, China, previously a major exporter of steel, became a net steel importer for the first time since the first half of 2009.

Suez Canal blockage

Finally, in March 2021, the six-day blockage of the Suez Canal by the megaship ‘Ever Given’, resulted in a temporary halt to the passage of cargo on this vital marine passageway. This impacted the supply of many engine components, resulting in further delays to the manufacturing and subsequent supply of engines.

It’s not all bad news though! Stage V engines are slowly starting to filter through and at Rapid Power Generation, we’re staying close to the detail! We have the very latest stock updates and lead time information from all our engine manufacturing partners.
